Occupying force:Urgent build started 12 May 1942. First aircraft, a Beaufort bomber of 100 Sqdn RAAF landed 22 May. Operations commenced and continued until re-assigned 27 June. 19th and 43 US Bombardment groups arrived, July \'42, operating until move to New Guinea in April/ May of \'43. RAAF No 5 Sqdn, Boomerang fighters and Wirraways moved in May \'43 until 10th November 1945
